Community Fridge
Not a Food Bank – A Community Resource
A food sharing project for the whole community
The Prestwood Community Fridge isn’t a food bank. It’s a community-based food redistribution scheme, open to everyone. We welcome a wide variety of visitors, each with their own reasons for coming along:
-
Caring about the environment and wanting to reduce food waste
-
Enjoying the challenge of cooking with whatever’s available
-
Learning more about seasonal produce
-
Saving money on their weekly shopping
-
Supporting local community initiatives
-
Experiencing financial hardship and needing a bit of extra help
How It Works
Our Fridge Shop looks and feels just like a small grocery store. You simply choose the items you’d like — the things you know you’ll use and enjoy — and fill your own bag.
We ask for a small donation of £3 or £5, depending on the size of the bag you take. These donations help keep the project financially sustainable, covering our running costs and reimbursing volunteers for their travel when collecting food.
We also use these funds to buy essential cupboard items, such as tinned beans, pulses, vegetables, soups, pasta, and rice — helping everyone create balanced, healthy meals using the fresh food we offer.
In addition, we keep a small stock of toiletries available for anyone who needs them.
Opening Times
We’re open every Wednesday from 9:30am and every Saturday from 9:00am, staying open until the fresh food has gone — usually around an hour and a half.
Want to volunteer?
Our volunteers won Outstanding Team from Bucks Community Board. They really are a great bunch! If you would like to join us, to work on shifts in our shop on Wednesday’s or Saturdays, or to collect food on Tuesday and Friday nights email prestwoodcommunityfridge.co.uk
Launched in July 2023, Prestwood Community Fridge was founded in response to the cost of living crisis and growing concerns about sustainability within our food systems.
Our mission is simple: to redistribute surplus food from supermarkets, shops, and restaurants to the local community — reducing waste and supporting people at minimal cost.
We are based in a unit on the corner of Crossroads Garage, 31 High St, Prestwood, Bucks, HP16 9EG.
Working in partnership with local businesses and national charities such as FareShare and Neighbourly, our dedicated volunteers collect surplus food, check its suitability, and redistribute it through our Fridge Shop, open every Wednesday and Saturday morning.
We’re proud to offer a regular supply of fresh fruit and vegetables, along with a variety of bakery items and other essentials. Thanks to our sustainability model, we can also freeze foods that supermarkets typically cannot.
For example, where supermarkets must remove items such as ready meals, meats, or dairy products on their use-by date, we can safely freeze them on the day of collection, extending their life and preventing unnecessary waste.
Prestwood Community Fridge is about more than food — it’s about community, sustainability, and care for both people and planet.
